The Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown imposed by nations around the world has drastically changed the lifestyle of its people. Various aspects of our professional and personal lives have undergone a quick transformation even as we adapt to the new normal. One such aspect is the Training Progression of Dasmarinas North National High School Athletics Team during pandemic time and how we drove and strived this period and conquered it. When pandemic happened a sudden change in our lives occurred. This pandemic affected thousands of peoples who are either sick or being killed due to spread out of Covid -19 virus. One of the most affected are the students and student-athletes of Dasmariñas North National High School. When schools closed student- athletes lost their structure and training routine because our government conducted a quarantine that forces people to stay on their houses for every one’s safety. Training of Student-athletes are temporarily stop and banned, specially our training of face to face practices and this may become the major problem of the Athletics Team of Dasmarinas North NHS during the time of pandemic.
When the Bureau of Learners Support Services (BLSS) conducted program with partnership of PSC, NSA and Local Government in October 2021 the sports competition will rise again but in selected sports event only and one of them are the Athletics Event. The chances to go back on track are 60-40 so we are immediately responses on this to train again from basic to progressive training. On the start, we are really experiencing somatic anxiety and negative mood. But this pandemic gave us to prepare and practice again. This pandemic helped our student-athletes to realize the things they needed to molded themselves to become champion again.
We created different Training Program and work-out like Training Progression, this a critical to overall well-being and impacts both our physical and mental health. On this matter, I as a coach and trainer of DNNHS Athletics team I created different strategies and training program to uplift the morale and regain the condition of each athlete on their own specific sports event. Prior to that, we upgraded the training routine, drills, exercises, work – out loads and interval training per session and this could be classifying into four stages.
First Stage is the Transition Period: This is the period from which the past practice shall be reviewed from the view point such as physical strength techniques, mental power, team work and so thereby working a new plan. Usually held on the month of June-July. Second Stage is the Training Period: This is the period from which the player should try and study the basic techniques trying to make their personal best performances. Usually held on the month of August to November. Physical strength 60%and Technical training 40%. Third Stage is the Perfection Period: This is the period from which the athletes shall have more actual performances trying to keep their physical strength in good condition. Perfection of the fundamental skills and application of techniques are most demanded. This usually done on the month of December to March. Physical strength 30% and Technical strength 70%. Last Stage is the Game Period: this is the most important period we plan in which the athletes keeping themselves in best condition, both physically and mentally so that they can display their best performances during on actual game. Usually done in the month of April and May. Physical strength 80% Mental strength 20%.
This is our simple training program but with highest output we made during pandemic time we applied during the Game Day both in Regional Qualifying for NISC held in Sta. Cruz Laguna and in National Invitational Sports Competition held in Ilo- ilo City last May 28-31, 2022. We considered also this as one of the best performing year of the DNNHS Athletics as Champion School again in line of track and field event. And this could not have happened without the support of our very own School Head Dr. Francis Kenneth D. Hernandez for his untiring and unwavering support to our School Sports Activity through financial and morale support to our student- athletes.
