Educational Conundrum Amidst the Pandemic

Ma. Theresa Calderon Paez, Teacher III

Dasmariñas Integrated High School

21st century education has always been revolving around reimagining and revitalizing approaches to answer to the demands of current trends of teaching and learning.

As we transition to the new normal set-up, the favorable decline of covid cases ushers the possibility of face-to-face classes this coming school year. In this trying time, there are two salient points that have scavenged us from challenging school year. First, we learned, the second is we have unlearned.

We learned. The pandemic has forced us to rethink and find solutions to ensure that education continues. In this matter, technology has proven its pivotal role in education. Through it, amidst the pandemic, students are continued to be serviced their right to education.

Ensuring the safety of our learners while we continue for learning to prosper made us reconsider offering our clients with wide arrays of learning modalities. This pandemic opened opportunities to educators utilize various platforms and innovative approaches that we never thought possible.

Schools have adopted various platforms such as educational TV shows, radio-based instructions, and live-online discussions. The use of online platforms and modular instruction paved way to blended learning. This deemed effective as we made it possible to wrap up this school year effectively.

The new normal for education necessitates us to unlearn what we have always known: mass lecture, heavy rows of desk, bustling hallways filled with students, heavy bags, and public exams. By unlearning those and embracing the different modalities of learning, we can establish an effective delivery of the new normal in education.

The pandemic has indeed left a major blow in education sector but by learning to unlearn, we are able to see and utilize various possibilities that lie dormant within our grasp that we failed to see not until the pandemic hits. In the end, the only victors in this scenario are those who are willing to learn and unlearn.
